Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! One of my favorite days of the year also usually comes along with some of my favorite movies. Check out the five movies you should watch on St. Patrick’s Day below!

Movies You Should Watch on St. Patrick’s Day #1 – Gangs of New York

Gangs of New York is a very odd movie. Part gangster movie, part coming of age story, with a mix of historical documentary and religious parable, there’s something for everybody in this melting pot of a film. What makes it Irish, exactly? The whole story centers on Irish immigration to the United States around the time of the Civil War. And what a tough time to be Irish it was!

St. Patrick’s Day Movie #2 – The Quiet Man

Who hasn’t dreamed of hanging up their boxing gloves for good to move back to the old country (Ireland) and settle down? That’s exactly what John Wayne’s Sean Thornton does in Quiet Man. The only problem is, the woman he falls in love with can’t/won’t marry him. What a conundrum! This is a must watch this St. Patrick’s Day simply because of how stinkin Irish it is!

Movie #3 – Michael Collins

An oft underrated film about Ireland’s struggle for independence, Michael Collins is quintessentially Irish. It’s also a great biopic of a man who had a massive impact on the future of Ireland. Oh, and Snape is in this movie. Well, Alan Rickman, not Snape.

Movie #4 – Waking Ned Devine

Did someone say “quintessentially Irish”? Were they talking about Waking Ned Devine? Because this movie is about as Irish as you can get. A lottery ticket. Drinking. Long, naked drives through the country side. Hell raising. Oh, and imagine all of the above but it being a bunch of old people doing the driving, the drinking and the hell raising. You know you are in for one heck of a wild ride!

Movie #5 – The Boondock Saints

What do you get when a couple of Irish Catholic Americans get together and decide to rid the world of evil? You get the Boondock Saints! The cult classic is as funny and thought provoking as it is profane and gory. So, naturally, it’s a great way to ring in this year’s St. Paddy’s Day!
