Pokemon TCG Scarlet and Violet – Most Valuable Cards
Sigh…the Sword and Shield era of Pokemon TCG has ended! A new base set is here – Pokemon TCG Scarlet and Violet! Cards have been circulating for a few weeks now in the prerelease timeframe. However the general release has been made and prices look quite a bit different than they did even just a week ago. Here are the top six cards that everyone wants from Pokemon TCG Scarlet and Violet, starting from most expensive to least to priciest.
#1 Miriam - 251/198
It’s nice to see that this card has come down a bit in price. During the pre-release timeframe, it was an expensive $200 card, or thereabouts. Currently, it’s trending around $80, but that’s likely to fluctuate. Click the link below to get the card on eBay. The artwork is interesting, and feels pretty vintage compared to the full art trainers we saw in Pokemon Sword and Shield. This card could be end up staying at the head of the pack thanks to the (somewhat disturbing) trend of cards with girls on them fetching a lot of money on the Pokemon market.
However, this card is has of the most beautiful artworks in this set, so it deserves this spot on the list.
#2 Miraidon ex Special Illustration Rare
Miraidon ex Special Illustration Rare is the second most valuable card in the set. Currently, this card is worth around $60. This card features a beautiful illustration of Miraidon, one of the two Legendary Pokémon that appear in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. My bet is that this card will be worth more than Miriam in the long run, but we’ll have to wait to see!
I like the Pokemon in the house looking at Miraidon through the window – it’s a nice touch.
#3 Gardevoir ex - 245/198 - SV01: Scarlet & Violet Base Set (SV01)
This is a pretty legit card. And I’m not even really a Gardevoir fan, either. Gardevoir ex Special Illustration Rare is the third most valuable card in the set, with a current value around $50. Given Gardevoir is one of the most popular Pokémon in the franchise, it’s likely that this card’s value will retain value quite well.
The home atmosphere touches on some of the aspects from the games that we often forget make it so warm – the interactions with people in different towns that make Pokemon feel like a real world.
#4 Koraidon ex - 247/198 - SV01: Scarlet & Violet Base Set (SV01)
Koraidon ex Hyper Rare is the fourth most valuable card in the set, with a current value of $37.
#5 Miriam - 238/198 - SV01: Scarlet & Violet Base Set (SV01)
Here’s Miriam again! I apologize for the Pokemon community’s weirdness in driving prices on these kinds of cards up. Just because cards have girls on them shouldn’t be enough to drive their value up this high, when other full art trainers are worth way less. It’s too bad that this is the case in Pokemon…but let’s just focus on the really cool artworks that drive value and ignore this odd fact.
#6 Gyarados ex - 225/198 - SV01: Scarlet & Violet Base Set (SV01)
At last! We’re to the point of my favorite card in this set! And, believe it or not, we pulled this card from our one and only Build and Battle Box that we got. I’m a big Gyarados fan in general (I love the shining Gyarados from earlier sets), and this is one of the cooler artworks for Gyarados that I’ve seen.
I expect this card’s value to hold up VERY well overtime, and it will likely overtake many of the other cards on this list (yeah, I’m talking about you, full art trainer Miriam). Right now, this Gyarados is worth around $30.
Final Thoughts on Pokemon TCG Scarlet and Violet
All in all, Scarlet and Violet is a decent entry into the storied history of Pokemon TCG. While it certainly doesn’t compete with the best Sword and Shield sets, it’s not at all bad for a base set. I’m sure that we’ll see even more interesting things to come out of later sets.
A few things that I didn’t like about this set, however – I think the gray border is a little weird. Additionally, I don’t know if it’s just me but the paper used for the common cards feels cheaper than the cards used to feel. I’m not sure if they switched materials or if this is just my imagination.
Lastly, if you compare this set with some of the previous sets, Scarlet and Violet cards are pretty cheap. Not one of these cards is worth more than $100. This could change, but it also could be showing a decrease in interest in Pokemon’s sets, and maybe a bumpy transition into the Scarlet and Violet era of Pokemon TCG.
