Surging Sparks Booster Box Early Opening and Review

I was lucky enough to receive an early booster box of Surging Sparks – the hottest new Pokemon pack soon to hit shelves at stores near you. Here’s what I got inside and how I feel about the set as a whole after my opening experience.

Surging Sparks Booster Box Early Opening

The Surging Sparks booster box looks just as cool when you hold it in your hands in person as it does in the pictures. I took a few pics of the box below.

Of course, the packs look even better once they are out of the box. The feeling you get when you stare down all 36 of those Surging Sparks booster packs is pure excitement. I felt really strongly like I might get a Pikachu ex SIR or even a Latias.

The hits I got from my Surging Sparks booster box

First up, I got lucky and pulled two of the cards I needed for my Ceruledge ex deck that I’m excited about. I’m still short a few Ceruledge ex but I bet I can get some of my friends to trade me.

Sylveon ex looks gorgeous in person

Although not necessarily a top Surging Sparks chase card, Sylveon ex saw quite a bit of hype during the spoiler season for this set. I was lucky enough to pull one and see its beauty myself!

While there’s no alternate artwork available for this card yet, my guess is the upcoming special set focused on Eeevee evolutions (Prismatic Evolution) will contain an SIR of this cool card. Typically special sets will include alternate arts of cards you get in other main sets.

This Illustration Rare card took me by surprise

This Vibrava Illustration Rare card took me by surprise simply because of how gorgeous it looked in person. It’s crazy the kind of attention the artists give to somewhat lesser known Pokemon. This kind of devotion to the craft is like world building – it creates the feeling that these cards are valuable, adding to our sense of excitement for the other cards in this set.

Speaking of Vibrava specifically, my favorite thing about this artwork is the lush, verdant landscape this Pokemon is depicted in, along with the foil patterns mimicking rays of light coming into view.

It’s not a card I was expecting to love, but I guess that’s one of the great things about opening Pokemon packs. As Forest Gump puts it, “life’s like a box of Pokemon cards: you never know what you’re going to find!”

Mesprit

Mesprit

The coolest thing about this card is that it looks like Mesprit is hanging out in the same area as Latios and Latias from this set.

The Tatsugiri pulls were real in this box

Lastly, while I’m not sure how excited I am about this particular pull, I did get two Tatsugiri Pokemon ex in this box. I guess that means that if I want to build a Tatsugiri ex deck I’m half-way to a play set. The only problem is, this Tatsugiri ex looks like a pretty awful Pokemon from a player’s standpoint, so I’m not sure why I’d want to do that. However, the Ultra Rare Tatsugiri ex card looks pretty cool!

Also in the realm of random but rare cards, I also pulled a Scovillain ex Ultra Rare.

The Verdict

Although I didn’t get anything particularly crazy from this box, I did land some solid hits, some gorgeous Illustration Rare artworks, and some very exciting Pokemon ex.

All-in-all, I highly recommend Surging Sparks and consider it to be one of the best Pokemon packs you can buy right now. Happy hunting!
