UNION ARENA: New Decks in Code Geass
A new set and all new strategies to try out: the fourth set of UNION ARENA featuring Code Geass offers a plethora of new decks to try out. But which one is right for you?
Below, we’ll cover a few interesting decks you might want to build for yourself and take to your next store tournament or Code Geass Rare Battle!
Strongest: Lancelot
I imagine the Lancelot deck will be the most popular following the release of Code Geass. It’s got similar vibes to Kurapika in regards to its overarching strategy: that being build up a solid energy line and then just decimate the board with your biggest baddies.
However, this deck benefits from having two very strong Raid characters to choose from, and a host of supporting characters with beneficial effects that help you find what you need more reliably.
The main challenge of this deck is just going to be hitting that insane 8 energy requirement. You have plenty of energy generation to make that happen, but it’s still going to be a matter of playing your cards right.

Fun to play: Code Geass Red
Code Geass Red (or the Pizza deck) may surprise you at your next store tournament – there’s some serious synergy here and this deck can be quite strong. It centers around getting Pizza affinity and event cards into your discard to power up the effects of your characters. Meanwhile, you can play this deck highly aggressively, looking to take a bunch of Life cards in a single turn via characters like C.C. who can attack twice and Suzaku who can ready characters who have already attacked.
Lastly, five-energy Lelouch can be played for added removal, sidelining anything with 4000 BP or less when played (as long as you have the required number of event cards in your discard).
It’s cool that we have this deck in this set. Code Geass is such an epic that you can easily forget that a significant portion of the show (and indeed part of its charm) is spent on the antics of Ashford High and Lelouch’s friends there. While this deck probably won’t be the most popular form the set because it lacks some of the incredible power the other big two possess, it still should be fun to play and strong enough to win some tournaments.
Dark Horse: Code Geass Purple
Another highly anticipated deck from this set is Code Geass Purple! Featuring the powerful Guren Mk-II and Gawain Knightmare Frames, this deck has the tools necessary to take the UNION ARENA meta by storm. With powerful card search and draw capabilities, two powerful Raid characters that work scary-well together, and a wide-range of supporting abilities from characters that truly set this deck apart, Code Geass Purple will have a big impact on the way the game is played.
While Lancelot will likely be the deck most players pick up right away due to its sheer power, this deck will undoubtedly see plenty of success and play and could even rival the top tier decks for dominance in the meta.
Good combo deck: Holy Swords
Lastly is the Holy Swords/Tohdoh deck. This deck looks pretty good despite the fact that it will likely be less popular in play than the other decks on this list. There are two primary reasons for why this deck will probably be less popular. The first is the fact that Tohdoh and the Holy Swords are supporting characters in the show. While competitive players will just play what will win them a tournament, most fans of the show picking up these products will be building decks around their favorite characters.
Second, this deck is very, very combo heavy. While that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, getting the kind of combos together that this deck needs you to in order for it to be successful requires a higher degree of difficulty than just slamming down high-powered cards and gaining instant benefits.
All of that being said, play your cards right and you can totally decimate your opponent’s field via these low cost but effective collection of characters. Meanwhile, this deck’s special card has the single highest BP reduction in the game – something worth noting in and-of-itself.
I’m very, very excited about testing these decks out for myself as soon as the set hits the shelves. And while there will undoubtedly be alternate builds for these decks, you can bet to find these core themes at your next competitive UNION ARENA event!
