What Will Happen in ‘The Witcher’ Season 3?
The Witcher season 2 has been released on Netflix. By now, you should have had plenty of time to binge it. So, you are probably wondering – what is going to happen in the third season of The Witcher?
Well, it’s hard to say. However, given the Netflix show appears to be at least loosely following the books, and given the current trajectory, I do have a few ideas about what will happen in season 3 of The Witcher. Additionally show-runners have confirmed that this season is the most closely adapted from the books so far, meaning we can expect a lot of the action that unfolds in ‘Time of Contempt’.
Warning – spoilers ahead.

In Season 3 of the Witcher, Yennefer and Geralt Will Burry the Hatchet
At least temporarily, Yennefer and Geralt will get back together again in some romantic way. Like the book it was largely based on, season 2 didn’t show the two star crossed lovers connecting romantically beyond just the briefest kiss. I don’t see this lasting throughout all of season 3.
Like in the book, Time of Contempt, I believe that Yennefer and Geralt will get involved in some sort of an intense romantic relationship again, similar to what they experienced in the first season. Not only does this happen in the book, but it seems long overdue from a story standpoint. Fans are just too invested in Yennefer and Geralts’ love story to get no payout for yet another season.
Geralt and Yennefer Will Then Be Separated
One of the most frustrating things about The Witcher story is how often Geralt and Yennefer are separated from one another. However, so far, the show has attempted to ease some of that separation. They know that together they have powerful chemistry and having them together on screen makes for good TV. But just as how keeping them on screen together makes for good television, so to speak, so does prolonging their on-again-off-again relationship.
Similar to the books, Yennefer and Geralt will once again be separated in order to face their own battles. However, I think the two will be reunited once again much sooner than they are allowed to in the books. But that might have to wait for an even later season to happen.
We Will See Vilgefortz Use His True Power
I’m still really confused about how Vilgefortz lost so badly to Cahir in the first season of The Witcher. I mean sure, Cahir is a decent fighter for a human. But Vilgefortz is nuclear-powered badass capable of tossing Geralt of Rivia around like a rag doll when he wants to. Hopefully the show will explain why this happened, but regardless, it’s spent enough time building up Vilgefortz to be what he exists in the Witcher world to be – evil-bad-guy-supreme.
In season 3, we will finally get a glimpse at why Vilgefortz is the most powerful mage alive.
Ciri and Yennefer Will Make Up
Ciri and Yennefer’s relationship got off to a bumpy start in the show. Yennefer almost betrayed Ciri, and certainly betrayed her trust. In the end, though, Yennefer was able to redeem herself to Ciri and Geralt by sacrificing her life to save the girl of destiny.
Still, old wounds sometimes take time to heal. The show will devote time to Ciri and Yennefer’s deepening bond, and slowly Yennefer will become the mother figure to the Lion Cub the way she was in the books.
Ciri Will Set Out on Her Own
Although we love seeing Ciri bond with her adopted parents, she never really comes into her own in the story until she sets out on her own adventure. By herself. My guess will be somewhere around the end of the season, after having plenty of time to bond with Yennefer and Geralt, Ciri will set out on her own adventure. Whether it will closely mirror her adventure in the books – given how the show is going, I doubt that it will. But in order for her to grow up and reach her potential, she needs to learn how to make it out there in the big bad Witchering world on her own.
Henry Cavill Will Get a Heroic Sendoff
After news broke that season 3 would be Cavill’s final season, many fans were upset. However, show-runners have confirmed that season three will be giving Henry Cavill a “heroic” sendoff from his time as The Witcher. This “heroic sendoff” comes in the form of Geralt’s resolve to find Ciri at the end of Time of Contempt. This occurs after they are separated due to a coup and ensuing battle that takes place between Geralt and Vilgefortz.
Although I can’t know all of this for sure, given the current direction the show is going, and how things play out in the books, I feel pretty strongly that we will see all of these things come to pass in Season 3 of the Witcher. Of course, there will be even more surprises as the writers will no doubt take additional creative liberties with the story as they seek to build out and expand the story into truly its own creation.
