Lorcana Ruby/Emerald deck strategy
Like any aggro deck, you need to get out the door running fast before your opponent can build up enough characters to wipe you out. Turn one, this deck has two strong options. Your best character to play is Cursed Merfolk as it can quest for two lore (which is a lot for just a one-cost character). Meanwhile, you have one-cost Flynn Rider – Confident Vagabond which can be helpful in the Steelsong matchup, protecting your character from being picked off by Cinderella’s singing ability.
Turn two characters gain a ton of lore
Your best two-cost character for gaining Lore has to be Simba. Simba was notable from the get for its three lore value – a rare attribute for two-cost characters. I’m surprised it took so long for this card to catch on but I guess we were just waiting for players to want to start building an aggro Ruby deck again.
Despite having the highest lore count of the two-cost characters, the others offer plenty of their own advantages. Enchantress, for example, makes your opponent pay for challenging her as she hits back for three strength. Meanwhile, your Ursula – Deceiver is strong because she can discard key songs from your opponents hand.
Last but not least, you may have your most effective character in the form of Lefou. He readies characters who are already exerted – thereby protecting them for the next turn.
Finally leverage the Tinker Bell/Peter Pan combo
Lorcana has been teasing interplay between Tinker Bell and Peter Pan in almost all renditions of the cards so far, but they’ve not seen competitive play. In this deck, that’s changed. Peter Pan gains additional strength based on having Tinker Bell in play, making him a versatile character capable of Rush, questing for two lore, and taking out characters in one hit as long as they have three will power or less.
When combined with Tinker Bell, Peter Pan also becomes Evasive the turn she is played, making him also a handy counter to Minnie Mouse – Stylish Surfer (a card this deck also runs which causes havoc when left unchecked).
Donald Duck – Perfect Gentleman is the draw engine
Oddly enough, this deck runs almost no draw engine besides Donald Duck – Perfect Gentleman. However, that card is so good I can see why. Every turn you are able to draw an extra card, with the only drawback being your opponent gets to draw a card, too. In many ways I’ve always seen Donald Duck as being better than Beast – Tragic Hero because Donald Duck’s draw support isn’t shut off when he’s damaged.
Ray – Easygoing Firefly is a powerful late game card
Ray has been one of my favorite five-cost questers in the game since it came out in Rise of the Floodborn, and I would actually recommend including four copies of him in your deck if you can (I would switch out the two Don Karnage’s for two Rays as I don’t really know what Don’s achieving in this deck that Ray can’t also do). Not only does he quest for three lore, he’s also Evasive, making him really handy in a tight spot.
Non character cards that help your aggressive strategy
While this deck is mostly characters, there are a few non-characters that help make it strong. Among these you have De Vil Manor to help you gain a little lore passively, Bounce, and Shield of Virtue. Bounce is a cheap two-cost action that helps keep your opponent off-balance while Shield of Virtue is the stronger card – letting you ready characters after they quest, helping them stay alive a turn longer to quest again another day.
Ruby/Emerald strengths and weaknesses
The current meta is dominated by control and midrange decks, but it’s always nice to see a powerful aggro deck do well. This deck is hyper strong against Ruby/Sapphire decks and can do quite well against Ruby/Amethyst decks as well thanks to its speed and Evasiveness early in the game. However, it suffers in matchups against that use songs to dish out damage like Emerald/Steel Discard or Steelsong because it doesn’t have much in it to defend against damage dealt by songs and actions.
Steer clear of those decks, however, and this deck could certainly help you on your way to victory!
Regardless of its strengths and weaknesses, Ruby/Emerald is certainly one of the strongest competitive Lorcana budget decks in the game right now, and a great entry-level deck for players wanting to learn the game.
