Meta Changing Cards in Pokemon: Shrouded Fable

Shrouded Fable is an upcoming special set featuring some of the mythical and legendary Pokemon of the mysterious Kitakami region found in the Teal Mask DLC of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. In this overview, we’ll be taking a look at the most meta changing cards that should be included in this set based on their inclusion in parallel sets in Japan.

*Updated July 18 with two additional cards.

Cassiopeia

Cassiopeia

We’ll start with Cassiopia first because this card has seen its official reveal already thanks to the Pokemon Company. This card is pretty broken, letting you bring any two cards from your entire deck into your hand as long as you don’t have any cards in your hand. Many decks are good at blazing through the cards in their hand quickly, making this a deadly supporter to say the least.

Kyurem

Kyurem

Many players are counting the days until this Kyurem card gets released in Shrouded Fable. Lost Zone Box has long dominated the meta, and Kyurem gives a powerful parting shot players can use against that deck. However, Manaphy is still in rotation, so this card isn’t foolproof to say the least. If you manage to get it off, however, watch out! Lost Zone players will need to watch their back and make sure their bench is covered via Manaphy at all times with this card roaming around in the wild.

Genesect

Another card officially revealed to be in Shrouded Fable, this Genesect card could have a potentially large impact on the meta. It has the ability to do a one-way shut off of ACE SPEC cards – something which is pretty incredible in a tight field where a single ACE SPEC play can win or lose you a game. Will decks actually go out of their way to include this card though as a tech against ACE SPECS? In a tight field anything is possible, and it’s quite likely they will as a way to gain the upper hand.

Haxorus

Haxorus

This Haxorus card reminds me of another Stage 2 from Sword and Shield with the same ability, and that card certainly saw plenty of play as a powerful tech against powerful decks like Mew VMAX. I’m talking about the Single Strike Beedrill. That card had a pretty handy combo thanks to a card that let you play it without evolving it, so I’m not sure if there’s a similarly easy way for this Haxorus to make it into the meta.

Regardless, that attack effect is scary enough for this card to be a serious consideration in competitive decks after Shrouded Fable.

Night-Time Academy

Night-Time Academy

I’m not sure if this card will see a ton of play, but I’m including it because I think it could really help Lost Zone decks. Those decks are hurt a lot by getting two really good cards off of a Flower Selecting. Night-Time Academy gives players the option to top deck a card they really don’t want to avoid those scenarios. This could be really good in Lost Zone Giratina VSTAR decks, especially, as that deck doesn’t have a solid Stadium choice at the moment.

Binding Mochi

Binding Mochi is a somewhat unassuming card, but it’s going to be a hugely powerful card in the Loyal Three Deck especially. However, that’s not the only potential use case for Binding Mochi, as it grants any Pokemon an additional 40 damage output as long as they are poisoned. Already I’ve been cooking up an idea with Binding Mochi and Brute Bonnet for an Ancient Deck that seems more promising with Binding Mochi, and I’m sure others will come up with similar ideas to take advantage of this pretty insane card.

Dusknoir and Dusclops

Dusknoir

Dusknoir and Dusclops have been gaining plenty of attention online from Pokemon TCG players who have taken note of its powerful Cursed Blast ability. This ability has the potential to be absolutely broken as it enables you to place a hefty number of damage counters on opposing Pokemon. This could be especially handy in Charizard ex or Dragapult ex decks, enabling you to take additional KOs in a single turn.

For a special set, Shrouded Fable is proving itself to be packing a pretty powerful punch, and I’m sure these cards among others will have a significant impact on the Pokemon TCG meta moving forwards. Don’t miss Shrouded Fable, coming to stores near you and online starting August 2, 2024.
