Why are people so excited about this set?
The internet is on fire with excitement for Prismatic Evolutions. But if you’re new to the Pokemon TCG, you might wonder what it is about this particular set that has people so excited.
Well, there are several reasons why. For starters, Eevee is one of the most popular Pokemon of all, which means people are going to be excited about pulling Eevee and its evolutions from packs. People being excited about pulling Eeveelutions means more demand for cards, and increased values.
Historical reasons to be excited about Prismatic Evolutions
This isn’t just conjecture, either. There’s historical data that basically proves Eeveelutions are worth their weight in gold. Indeed, one of the most expensive cards in modern memory is an Eeveelutions – the legendary “Moonbreon” card that is worth over $1,000.
Released in Evolving Skies, Evolving Skies is still considered (years after its release) to be the greatest modern Pokemon pack of them all. Indeed, it will likely be up their considered one of the best Pokemon TCG sets of all time.
And what Pokemon are featured heavily in this set?
Eeveelutions.
Will Prismatic Evolutions be as popular as Evolving Skies?
Despite how exciting this set already looks (and based on the gorgeous and highly collectible cards we’ve seen), I don’t think Prismatic Evolutions will be as highly regarded as Evolving Skies in the long run.
Surely the close relationship between the two sets will drive an insane amount of popularity for this set, but there are a few things Evolving Skies had going for it that helped cause its massive popularity that Prismatic Evolutions can’t replicate, regardless of how good it is.
Here’s why.
Prismatic Evolutions is only a special set
I’m not trying to downplay “special sets” at all here by saying “only.” However, given it is a special set and not a main release like Evolving Skies was, there are a few disadvantages that could impact this set’s popularity. Booster Boxes are one of the most popular items for TCG collectors and players to purchase, but Prismatic Evolutions won’t be available in Booster Boxes.
Similarly, there won’t be any prerelease events and things of that nature to further fuel the hype for this expansion.
Pull Rates
From my experience, special sets tend to have better pull rates than main sets. On the one hand this can create a lot of excitement to buy products as people will get a sense of accomplishment from getting a hit in nearly every pack. However, it also negatively impacts the value of the cards released. Higher pull rates means greater supply, and more affordable prices.
One of the things that has driven Evolving Skies to such a legendary status among the Pokemon TCG community is its difficult pull rates. Sure, its pull rates weren’t abysmal, and there was an incredible number of secret rares you could pull, helping increase the odds of a hit.
But the odds of getting any particular card from a pack is still very, very low.
Given there are only 175 cards in Prismatic Evolutions versus the 300+ in Evolving Skies, odds of pulling specific chases should be better.
External factors that made Evolving Skies Popular
Apart from all of this, there are external factors that made Evolving Skies so popular that can’t be replicated. First, there was the Pokemon TCG shortage that was going on. This shortage actually fueled demand for Pokemon cards, and during those days you could even make some money off of just regular old cards you got in packs.
Now, the Pokemon Company has fixed their shortage problems and print record numbers of cards. While that doesn’t mean people don’t still want Pokemon cards, it does mean that there tends to be less hype in general around sets. Ironically, the shortage helped catapult Evolving Skies into incredible popularity.
Prismatic Evolutions Spoilers
Now that we are done with our relatively brief history lesson, let’s take a look at the cards that have been leaked online already.
Eeveelution Special Illustration Rares
Believe it or not, we’ve already gotten a look at the English versions of the Special Illustration rare artworks for each and every Eeevee card coming out in Prismatic Evolution. You can see them below, but they are:
Umreon ex SIR
Evee ex SIR
Espeon ex SIR
Flareon ex SIR
Vaporeon ex SIR
Jolteon ex SIR
Leafeon ex SIR
Sylveon ex SIR
Glaceon ex SIR
A couple of noteworthy things to mention about these cards:
For starters, each of these Eeveelutions are Stellar Tera type, which explains the gleaming jewels and crowns on their head. It’s also the reason for why they have multi-colored energy cost requirements.
A lot of people were not sure how they would feel about Eeveelutions depicted with crowns on their head compared to the Evolving Skies set which may have featured Gigatamax versions of these Pokemon. Visually, however, they remained looking the same other than their enhanced size.
After looking at these illustrations, however, I doubt many people will be complaining about the crowns. They are interwoven into the artworks of the card so well that you hardly even notice them other than for their interesting colors.
Noteable differences from Evolving Skies
Another interesting difference so far from Prismatic Evolutions and Evolving Skies is the fact that Evolving Skies didn’t actually contain within it each and every Eeveelution. Some were actually left out of the main set and available as black star promos instead, like Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon. Additionally, VMAX versions of these cards didn’t have alternate arts available in Evolving Skies and were only available in special box sets that came out later (box sets which are very rare and valuable today).
While Espeon was featured as Espeon V in both regular and alternate artwork in Evolving Skies, Espeon VMAX’s alt art was only featured in Fusion Strike.
It’s pretty cool that this set bucks that tradition and instead included all of them in one expansion!
Eeevelution ex double rare cards
In addition to the Special Illustration Rare cards, the regular Double Rare versions have been leaked online as well. You can catch a glimpse of them in images below.
Eeveelution Special Reverse Holos
Last but not least on the Eeveelution front, we’ve also gotten our first look at special reverse holo versions of the each of the regular rare versions of these cards. Check them out below.
Prismatic Evolutions is about more than Eeveelutions
While Eeveelutions take center stage in this set, there are even more exciting cards to chase beyond those. In this way, you can think of Prismatic Evolutions as a sort of “greatest hits” drawing from some of the most iconic cards over the past year.
In particular, in this set we’re getting alternate artworks of some of the most popular Pokemon cards of the current era. Popular Pokemon cards like Roaring Moon ex and Raging Bolt ex are getting a whole new (and enhanced) look in this set. Meanwhile, popular trainers like the Team Star Bosses are getting a total makeover.
Below, see these and others among the latest cards spoiled from the Japanese sister set. I’m also including some higher resolution images of the Eeveelutions shown above as these cards have been officially revealed as part of the Japanese “Terastal Festival.”
Prismatic Evolutions Secret Rare Card List
Prismatic Evolution Products
In addition to these killer cards, we’ve also gotten a preview into the products that will be releasing with this set. As mentioned already, these products will be coming out on a staggered release schedule meaning it will be several months until they are all available.
Prismatic Evolutions Elite Trainer Box (ETB)
Because Prismatic Evolutions is a special set, you won’t be able to get booster boxes the way you would for a regular set. For that reason, ETBs might be your best bet to get as many cards as you can, while the gorgeous storage box it comes with is an added incentive to add this to your purchase list.
Apart from the storage Box and the nine booster packs, this ETB also includes one of the best ETB promo cards we’ve seen in a while – an exlusive Eevee promo.
Release date: January 17, 2025
Prismatic Evolutions Poster Collection
While the poster collection may seem a little bit gimicky for a Pokemon TCG product, I actually love these posters. I still have the poster I got from the Pokemon 151 poster product on my wall. This poster looks just as cool as that one did, featuring (you guessed it) Eveelutions.
Release date: January 17, 2025
Prismatic Evolutions Surprise Box
One of the more exciting products getting a later release date but still featuring Prismatic Evolutions is the surprise box coming out on February 7, 2025. If you are lucky enough to find this highly collectible item in stock somewhere, it includes:
