Pokemon TCG: Surging Sparks Prerelease Promos & Decks
Surging Sparks is almost here and we finally know what every single one of its promo cards do! This is important as these promo cards will be what make up the backbone of your Surging Sparks prerelease deck!
Below, let’s look at every single Surging Sparks prerelease promo card, what those cards do, and how you can use them to utterly vanquish your opposition – in the most loving way possible (of course).
Surging Sparks Prerelease Promos
We’ve had two really great prerelease kits back to back in Twilight Masquerade and then again in Stellar Crown. That being said, this set is looking a little more standard in its gamut of promos. That doesn’t mean these prereleases won’t be a blast (I’m sure they will be), but the mechanics look to be fairly simple compared to recent expansions.
Oh well. The epic pulls you could get from your Build and Battle Box is more than worth attending for!
Below, let’s look at how you want to think about deck building based on the particular promo that you get!
Magneton
Overvolt Discharge (this Magneton’s ability) is very strong. However, it’s going to come at a cost, especially in prerelease formats where the prize race is so tight. It’s very hard to come back in this format once you get behind, so if you’re going to intentionally knock out one of your Pokemon, you better do so knowing you are going to have a favorable prize trade down the road.
I would look to use this ability especially in decks where you’ve pulled a Pokemon ex that you can use. For example, if you pull a Pikachu ex, this ability is a no brainer as your opponent will be very unlikely to outpace you once you get that behemoth up to speed.
Indeedee
Indeedee is not only the worst promo you could get from this group of promo cards, its also one of the worst promos I’ve seen included in a Build and Battle Deck in some time. I don’t see a situation where healing 30 damage from your Pokemon is going to matter much in a prerelease deck, unless you have a particularly tanky Pokemon that you can somehow keep going longer. If you have the misfortune of getting the Indeedee prerelease kit, I would consider going with another strategy either from your booster packs or the other half of your deck. All prerelease deck kits come with two of these promos cards. Only one of them will be stamped, however.
Chien-Pao
Unless there is a stadium getting released in this set that’s really going to benefit you from having it in the discard, I’m not seeing how you would want to build your deck around this particular card.
That being said, there are two stadiums getting introduced In this expansion that mess with the HP of Pokémon on the field. If those are featured heavily in the Build and Battle kits then this card might be somewhat helpful.
Gouging Fire is the strongest Promo
Last but not least, we have Gouging Fire. Although one of my favorite Pokemon from the Scarlet & Violet era, this Gouging Fire card would normally not be a deadringer for best prerelease promo. Given some of these cards we’ve seen, however, it’s actually pretty strong, with a strong attack capable of knocking out most of what you’re going to come across in a prerelease format.
What makes this card particularly good is that in prerelease format, you start with four prize cards, meaning Blazing Charge gets its extra attack boost from the start!
Like I said at the start, I’m not seeing this prerelease being nearly as dynamic as recent sets. But that could change based on what cards are included in your kit! There could be some interesting synergies lying in wait for us. If I had to pick which of these promos to build my deck around, however, I would go with Gouging Fire.
