The Most Expensive New Pokemon Cards of 2023

While we have another list of the most expensive Pokemon cards right now overall, in this article, we’re going to be taking a look at the most expensive new cards to come out in 2023. From Van Gogh Pikachu all the way up to the latest cards from Paradox Rift, this list will be giving you the very best of Pokemon TCG 2023.

10. Charizard ex Special Illustration Rare – Obsidian Flames

Market price: $53.86

Spoiler alert – this isn’t the only Charizard Pokemon card to make the list of most expensive new cards to come out in 2023. But it is certainly the most powerful. Not only does this card look incredibly cool with the Tera form giving it a special hardness visual texture you can almost feel, it’s also competitively powerful, dominating the Pokemon TCG competitive scene almost since its release.

This card will long be collectible not only because it is a Charizard card but because it is such a memorable piece of Pokemon TCG history.

9. Magikarp Illustration Rare – Paldea Evolved

Market price: $56.84

It’s sort of ironic that Magikarp makes this list of top Pokemon cards of 2023. Its artwork is gorgeous enough, but nobody would expect this useless Pokemon to be so valuable. That’s sort of the way it is with Magikarp, though. It’s impossible to train in the games and boarderline useless. If you hang in there long enough, however, Magikarp evolves into a beautiful and fearsome Gyarados.

If you were savvy enough to hold onto this Paldea Evolved chase card, you’re sitting on some nice value right now. And who knows? Past Magikarp cards have done really well overtime in value, so this might be one to hold onto for a long time.

8. Squirtle – Pokemon 151 Pokemon Center Exclusive

Market price: $61.62

This Squirtle may look like any other Squirtle card, but looks can be deceiving. Look closer and you’ll notice that it has a special stamp on it. That stamp is where the value comes from. As far as I know, the only way to get this Pokemon Center exclusive was to preorder the Pokemon 151 Ultra Premium Collection from Pokemon Center. Given that sort of exclusivity, this Squirtle is relatively rare – hence the high market price.

7. Tinkaton – Paldea Evolved Staff Promo

Market price: $64.02

Speaking of special stamps, this prerelease Tinkaton has two of them – one noting it is from a prerelease kit and the other with elusive “STAFF” stamp. While this stamp doesn’t look great, it does make this card considerably more rare, as you have to be a Pokemon judge or other sort of official to get them.

6. Giratina VSTAR Secret Rare – Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery

Market price: $71.71

I think you really have to understand the Pokemon Lore to really get what’s going on in this card. Giratina comes from a distortion world that inspired the Lost Zone in Pokemon TCG. But even if you aren’t a Pokemon lore buff, you can still appreciate this beautiful card. As a long time Giratina VSTAR player, I wouldn’t mind adding this card to my collection myself. Regardless how you feel about it, this card is worth a lot of money, popular amongst both players and collectors.

5. Roaring Moon ex Special Illustration Rare – Paradox Rift

Market price: $81.60

Roaring Moon ex Special Illustration Rare has my personal favorite artwork from the Scarlet & Violet era of Pokemon TCG of 2023. First of all, Roaring Moon ex is a really cool Pokemon in the TCG, and the deck is a lot of fun to play. Second, this artwork really reminds me of some of the best artwork from my favorite sets of the Sword and Shield era. It’s certainly going to go down in history as one of the most remembered chase cards of 2023 for some time to come.

4. Iono Special Illustration Rare – Paldea Evolved

Market price: $86.31

I don’t think most people have to look at market data to know that this rare Iono card is one of the top Pokemon chase cards of 2023. It was the defining card of Paldea Evolved, and one of the strongest Pokemon cards of 2023, as well.

3. Charizard ex Special Illustration Rare – Pokemon 151

Market price: $115

As epic and beautiful of a card as Iono was, however, there is one chase card that you can get in packs from 2023 that beats it out. That card is the special illustration rare version of Pokemon 151’s Charizard ex. While not used competitively like its Obsidian Flames cousin, this is the prime collectible Charizard card of 2023, and likely going to go down in history as one if its most gorgeous and desirable forms.

2. Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat

Market price: $146.18

Although there was once a mad dash to get just about any Pokemon product back during the great Pokemon shortage of 2021, Pokemon’s efforts to mass produce its cards at an almost unimaginable scale to the tune of a billion cards has pretty much solved supply issues. However, there are unique instances where the Pokemon TCG craze is still far greater than what they are prepared to handle.

Take this incredibly rare and valuable Pikachu card, for example. Created in collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum and Pokemon to commemorate famed artist Vincent Van Gogh, the card caused such incredible demand for the museum that they had to actually pull it from being available. Today, it is worth a lot of money, and one of the most valuable Pokemon cards of 2023.

  1. Paradise Resort – World Championships 2023

Market price: $700

The most expensive new Pokemon card of 2023 is the World Championships promo. The only way to have gotten this promo was to attend the exclusive Pokemon world championships event. So, of course, it’s worth a lot.

The Play! Pokemon Prize Pack cards are worth a lot

Play! Pokemon prize packs are worth a lot of money and you can only get them from Prize pack boosters which you get from attending Pokemon league play or other Pokemon sanctioned events. They have a special stamp on them which is how you know they are from those packs.

The most valuable Prize Pack series cards from 2023 include:

  • Charizard VSTAR Prize Pack Series: $164

  • Radiant Charizard: $127

  • Umbreon VMAX: $113

  • Mew VMAX: $68.74

  • Radiant Greninja: $66.22
