Upcoming Pokemon TCG Releases

While we don’t typically get a full release schedule for the Pokemon TCG, we do get a strong sense of what’s on the roadmap thanks to a combination of official announcements made by the Pokemon Company and looking at sets released in Japan.

While Japanese sets often vary a bit from international releases, it’s usually not by a lot and Japanese cards typically make their way overseas before long.

With that being said, let’s look at the Pokemon TCG release schedule and some of the exciting releases confirmed for 2025.

Prismatic Evolutions – January 17, 2025

Prismatic Evolutions was the first set released for 2025 and it was a big one. While it was a special set and not a main one, it drove insane hype throughout the Pokemon TCG world as collectors and profiteers alike rushed to local shops hoping to bag elusive products.

The ultimate chase card of this set is the Umbreon ex SIR which currently is one of the most expensive ungraded Pokemon TCG cards on the market. However, this set boasts an insane number of secret rare cards and alternate artworks including special Poke Ball/Master Ball prints on reverse holo foils. This combined with insane demand makes Prismatic Evolutions one of the biggest collector sets in recent memory.

Next release: Journey Together – March 28, 2025

While Prismatic Evolutions made waves of seismic proportions to start the year out with a bang, it’s far from the only exciting expansion slated to come out in 2025. Indeed, this year really is shaping up to be a big one for Pokemon TCG fans, and each set we know about has its own layer of history baked into it.

Take, for example, the first main set of 2025 which will be coming out in March. Called Journey Together, this set is the first main Pokemon TCG set since the very early days of Gym Challenge and Gym Heroes where alternate versions of Pokemon were introduced into the game bearing specific trainer names alongside the Pokemon name.

This adds a unique layer to these cards as they are not just any Pokemon but that specific Pokemon. While this can add value to these cards, it also impacts their gameplay, unlocking combos and strategies only available to these specific cards.

Destined Rivals – May 30, 2025

A team rocket set has been rumored for quite some time to be coming out in 2025, with an official nod from the Pokemon Company being made in the form of a trailer released at Pokemon Worlds in 2024. Now, however, we’re starting to see not only some of the cards in Japanese sets that we’re likely to get in this set, but we’re even seeing artworks for booster packs.

Indeed, this set looks every bit as exciting as you would hope it would be, and it’s another huge historic set for the Pokemon TCG.

Clearly a nostalgia driven set, the last time we had a Team Rocket set was way back in 2000 and it was one of the first sets to get released.

Many, many Pokemon TCG fans like myself remember heading to their local department store to pick up the original rendition of this set and collecting unique, Team Rocket Pokemon who differed from the original varients of these Pokemon.

Cards like Dark Charizard and Dark Dragonite are particularly iconic cards from this set but they aren’t the only ones. Indeed, this whole Dark trend continued in future sets with the likes of Dark Typhlosion getting included in later sets. However, the original Team Rocket set will always hold a special place in the minds of collectors and many of these cards are highly valuable today.

It’s exciting to say the least to consider what kind of cards and opportunities we we will be getting in this upcoming expansion, but I would not be surprised to see near Prismatic Evolutions-level excitement for these cards and products.

2025 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting years in recent memory for the Pokemon TCG. With historic sets coming out left and right, it feels like the hobby is growing to reach ever new heights. And I’ll be updating this page with more info as it becomes available so stay tuned!
