Floodborn Genie in Azurite Sea Combos Well with this Card
A new Floodborn Genie character card revealed in the upcoming Azurite Sea Lorcana set is getting a lot of attention online. When played with another card that is also coming out in Lorcana’s sixth set, it actually unlocks a pretty big strategic card advantage for players.
Below, let’s look into how this combo could work, additional card interactions that would be interesting to try out, as well as some Shift targets for the newly revealed Genie – Wonderful Trickster.
Breaking Down Genie – Wonderful Trickster
Before getting into how this character combos with other strategies, let’s break down the card itself. For starters, Genie has the powerful Shift keyword, meaning it can be played for a relatively cheap cost (compared to how much it would cost to play this character otherwise).
Second, he’s got a pretty solid collection of stats, with four strength and seven willpower. Four strength protects him from many threats that are common in the game. Seven Willpower, meanwhile, makes him hard to take out via damage.
You probably won’t need to quest with him much, but in case you do he’s got a solid two lore. That’s nothing to write home about on its own, but it can come in handy when you need just that extra little bit of lore to win.
Lastly, he’s Inkable, meaning he won’t be competing for those critical un-Inkable slots in your deck. That alone makes this card much more attractive than it otherwise would be to players.
Your Reward Awaits
Stats aside, the main reason to play Genie is his ability. With “Your Reward Awaits,” you are drawing a card every single time you play a card. This means any card: cards you sing, shift and otherwise. That’s a pretty strong draw engine. In fact, it might be a little too strong if not for the fact that Genie’s second ability (Forbidden Treasure) forces you to put all cards from your hand onto the bottom of your deck at the end of your turn.
So why is this good? Well, when you combine it with Yzma – Conniving Scientist (also coming out in Azurite Sea), you get an even more solid draw engine.
Get a guaranteed three cards each turn with Yzma
I’ve written elsewhere about how Yzma is the most underrated card going into Azurite Sea. While she’s handy to have around in just about any deck, she’s especially good in this deck. Assuming you have her in play and you’ve used Genie’s ability in the previous turn, you are guaranteed to draw three cards your next turn. That means between getting extra cards via Genie whenever you play a card, you are also seeing an additional two-to-three cards each turn with Yzma (or more if you have several Yzma). That’s some incredible potential.
Other possible card interactions
While pairing this Floodborn Genie with Yzma is likely going to be the most reliable way to play this combo, you could potentially pair it with Clarabelle as well. This way you would be ensuring you had zero cards in your hand before using Clarabelle’s “Keep In Step” ability to draw as many cards as your opponent currently has in their hand.
While that does sound really cool in theory, having two seven cost characters in play for a combo is a tall order, so you’re probably better off with the Yzma/Genie combo.
Seven cost character stretch goal
Speaking of stretch combo goals for this card, you could even gain further benefit from the whole combo via having Jafar in play. By having Jafar in play, you’re going to be gaining a lot of lore whenever this combo goes off.
Now, this is getting even more crazy even in theory because it requires having three seven cost characters on the field at once. But sometimes it’s just nice to dream!
Potential Shift targets for Genie
Last but not least, let’s look at some potential shift targets for Genie.
If you are going the Emerald/Amethyst route (probably the best one), you have a very easy Shift target in the form of Genie – The Ever Impressive from all the way back in The First Chapter. This is a straightforward vanilla Genie that only costs two to play, making it a very attractive Shift target indeed.
Speaking of vanilla Genie characters, there’s another one available to you in Sapphire, meaning you could certainly build a Sapphire version of this strategy. You wouldn’t have access to Clarabelle but you could still do the Yzma combo.
However you choose to build your deck with Genie – Wonderful Trickster, it’s looking like a card with a ton of potential, and a lot of fun to play! Hope you enjoyed going down the rabbit hole with me on how to use this particular card and stay tuned for more updates on Azurite Sea Spoilers as we get closer to its release date on November 15th!
