Three-Prizers Are Coming Back to the Pokemon TCG as Mega Evolutions
An exciting mechanic is coming back to the Pokemon TCG and will undoubtedly shake up the meta in a good way: three-prize Mega Evolutions.
Being called part of a new “series” (whatever that means), these Mega Evolutions will function much like the VMAX Pokemon we had back in the Sword and Shield days. Only these Mega Evolutions won’t evolve from special V Pokemon but instead regular Pokemon the same way they do with evolved Pokemon ex.
The Pokemon Company spoils two new Mega Evolution Pokemon
Having something a little bigger than two Prize Pokemon should cause a welcome shift in a meta that’s become somewhat predictable. Indeed, some of the most fun days of the Pokemon TCG in recent memory were when a wide range of different kinds of Pokemon were availble to the game – for example VSTARs, ex, and VMAX Pokemon all duking it out in the same arena.
Having the option to field mega-powerful Pokemon ex like these will add further variety to the meta-game, and should be pretty exciting for trainers looking to master new strategies and advanced plays.
Of the two cards above, Gardevoir seems the stronger option. This card could be added to existing Gardevoir ex decks to unlock unparalleled power. This comes at an excellent time for that deck as the 2025 rotation will largely remove some of its power given the fact its solid Kirlia draw engine is rotating out.
You’ll also notice that neither of these cards have the included set serial number at the bottom. I guess we’ll just have to wait for more info to become available about when this Mega Evolution set is coming out and what it’s going to be called!
Pokemon TCG gets more “type specific” with new Mega Evolution series
When cards are specificly built around certain engines as opposed to being generally available to all decks, it creates welcome variety and a plethora of exciting and distinct strategies to master. Currently, the game is like a wide-open playing field with powerful buffs like Fezandipiti being used by all decks.
Getting more specific to certain strategies the way specific Owner Pokemon are going to be in the upcoming Journey Together set or like type-specific cards that are coming out causes trainers to think more carefully about their perfect 60.
For example, the Premium Power Pro grants 30 more damage to fighting type Pokemon, making this an excellent tech for decks using that specific type.
With the inclusion of Trainer Pokemon, new Mega Evolution Pokemon, and cards that benefit specific strategies, the Pokemon TCG is looking up to be very, very exciting in 2025. And while I’ve said that plenty of times lately, it’s good to see so much variety coming to the game, and three-prizers once again entering the ring could mean big things for the competitive health and fun of competing!
