What if Lorcana Released a Special Set?

Lorcana Special Set

You’ve got to hand it to Ravensburger: with one billion cards printed in its first year, Lorcana is undoubtedly a smash hit. And while we’ve had plenty of exciting sets released to date, one thing we haven’t seen yet is a special Lorcana set.

If you aren’t familiar with the term “special set” don’t worry – I’ll be getting into that in a moment. But if Lorcana were to start releasing special sets periodically in between major sets, it could open up an opportunity for them to explore very specific themes or Disney franchises more deeply than a major set can.

Here’s why a special set from Lorcana is something to be really, really excited about.

What is a special TCG set?

In the Pokemon TCG, for example, there are main sets released several times a year very similar to how Lorcana’s reelease schedule. However, in addition to these main sets there are also special sets. These sets are much, much smaller in regards to the number of new cards introduced to the game, while they frequently include a large number of secret rare cards, often with alternate artwork that makes them highly collectible.

While these sets tend to have less of an impact on gameplay, they still include interesting new cards and strategies players enjoy exploring. A big benefit of these sets is also collectibility.

Typically, these special sets explore a theme that is much smaller and more specific than a main set. Additionally, they will include special atworks of cards from other sets, giving players and collectors multuple chances to collect their favorite cards in gorgeous renderings.

Special sets would give Lorcana unique ways to theme

Unique theming opportunities would be the most exciting thing for a special set for Lorcana. Whereas each set so far has built exponentially on the lore of Lorcana, it would be really cool to see a smaller scale special set dive into a single group of characters or theme.

In case you were wondering if this were the kind of thing Ravensburger would do, I can tell you that releasing special expansions of games is something Ravensburger has experience with. If you’ve read my review of my favorite Villainous game, you will know they have the capacity to put out some seriously interesting and unique products.

If you couldn’t tell from the image I included in this blog, I feel like a Nightmare Before Christmas special set would be super cool. It could maybe even take place within an area in the Lorcana realm we haven’t explored, with characters we aren’t familiar with. This way there wouldn’t be any pressure to include the special set theme into the broader Lorcana lore.

Not only would this add depth to the Lorcana universe, it would give fans of very specific characters something to get excited about!

A special set could occupy down-time in between releases

Owning a popular website about two different card games lends me a somewhat unique insight into the hype cycle for releases as they come out. Right now, Lorcana has a pretty steep drop off in terms of excitement inbetween sets. While having championships helps, people tend to fall off in excitement in the month before a new set comes out before getting hyped again for the new one.

By then, people have played with all the new cards, opened the products they wanted, and are in coast mode until the new set comes out.

Breaking this motion up with a special set would be a great way to keep the enthusiasm for the game going.

A special set could mean especially unique sealed products

Apart from the opportunity to release uniquely themed cards, we haven’t seen a massive amount of variety yet from the products Lorcana releases. Sure – we have some really cool stuff. But what about an entire collection of new cards themed around a Disney property? Maybe you could get a Jack promo that only comes in the special set collection box (going back to the Nightmare Before Christmas theme)?

A special product you can’t get during main sets would be a really exciting thing for Lorcana fans and I could see it being massively popular.

Before long, I’m sure that we’ll get a special set like the one I’m outlining here. To me, it can’t happen soon enough!
