All Ursula’s Return Spoilers Revealed– May 10, 2024
All of the cards from the main set of Ursula’s Return have been revealed. Browse the final cards to get revealed below plus our commentary.
Amber cards
Mirabel Madrigal – Gift of the Family 18/204
Although we are a long ways away from seeing the enchanted rares from this set, my money would be on getting one of Mirabel. She’s the star of Encanto, after all. Gameplay-wise, her ability isn’t that crazy, but it certainly means you can build a deck around Madrigal characters (the starter deck coming out in Ursula’s Return probably plays on this mechanic).
Daisy Duck – Lovely Lady 6/204
Daisy Duck may not look like a lot here, but don’t be fooled. One-cost characters can be quite effective when they have three will power.
Felix Madrigal – Fun-Loving Family Man 9/204
Mirabel Madrigal – Prophecy Finder 19/204
Despite being the hero of her own story, neither of the Mirabel cards revealed thus far seem to possess very strong capabilities.
Record Player 32/204
Perhaps aggro decks will once again rule the Lorcana format? This card could give them a huge boost by making it harder for your opponent’s to take out weak characters while simultaneously making Stitch – Rockstar stronger.
Sign the Scroll 30/204
This is an interesting card that could play well into the Amber/Emerald discard deck strategy that was pretty popular up until this last set. Giving your opponent an impossible choice (discarding a card or giving away free lore) is something very much inline with Ursula.
Ariel – Singing Mermaid 3/204
We’ve never seen a character with more than a Singer 5 ability. Ariel being four-cost but having a Singer 7 ability must be the strongest Singer to date. And while Singing for 7 would be scary enough on its own, given the new Sing Together mechanic introduced by Lorcana in set four, the implications of this particular card just got a whole lot scarier.
Ursula – Eric’s Bride 24/204
This Ursula card displays the new alternate Shift ability that enables her to be played by discarding a card from your hand as opposed to just paying the cost from your Inkwell. This card would make an excellent addition to a discard deck. However, her Shift ability is just a inhibiting as it is helpful. Sure, you may not have to spend Ink to play her, but if you don’t happen to have a song card in hand you can’t play her, either.
I think less competitive decks will try and run this Floodborn Ursula, but she probably won’t be much of a mainstay in competitive decks.
Lost In The Woods 29/204
Aggro decks – those that look to gain 20 lore as quickly as possible – have been less popular in a control focused meta. That being said, Lost in the Woods could be a strong addition to Amber Ink decks that could use it to stay alive longer, and quest lore faster.
Look at this Family 28/204
Despite being a cool concept, this card has a pretty high cost for an effect that’s only slightly better than the popular “Be Our Guest” card from The First Chapter.
Cinderella – Melody Weaver 4/204
Cinderella seems to have the makings of a powerful card. However, as pointed out by Savjz on Twitter, she’s weak to the Medusa threat which makes most powerful characters with strength three or under pretty easy to kill. That being said, what a cool card!
Mickey Mouse – Musketeer Captain 16/204
It’s hard to deny how cool this card looks, and it’s got Bodyguard and Support (without the explanations of what those Keywords mean). Apart from that, This Mickey Mouse Captain has a powerful ability that makes it more possible than ever to build a specifically bodyguard deck. When he’s played, you draw a card for each Bodyguard character in play. That’s pretty incredible and going to work well in decks like Tiana Aggro that love to use bodyguards.
Goofy – Musketeer Swordsman 12/204
Goofy – Musketeer Swordsman is a pretty handy bodyguard character that could do well in a bodyguard themed deck. You have to be pretty dedicated to that strategy, however, as his ability will only be helpful in scenarios when you play a bodyguard character.
Minnie Mouse – Musketeer Champion 17/204
Minnie Mouse is a character with a pretty cool ability, allowing her to banish characters with 5 strength or more. This is very similar to the Greatest Criminal Mind song that has seen play. You could pair her well with the Queen – Commanding Presence to get rid of pesky opposing characters in a pinch.
Ursula – Vanessa 25/204
Ursula’s Singer Four ability is impressive. However, she’s likely going to be included in Amber decks mostly for Shifting into the Floodborn Ursula capable of discarding cards.
Mickey Mouse – Leader of the Band 15/204
There are a lot of characters with Support or those that grant support in this set, and I’m not exactly sure why. Perhaps the strategy will become clearer as more cards are revealed.
Agustin Madrigal – Clumsy Dad 1/204
Golden Harp – Enchanter of the Land 11/204
This card is really cool in theory but probably not so good in practice. Although being Inkable and a one-cost character with two lore looks good in theory, in reality there are very niche situations where this card would actually be helpful, making it not much of a boon for most decks.
Stitch – Ballerino Alieno 23/204
Miracle Candle 31/204
Miracle Candle is a pretty cool item. It’s only a two-cost card, it’s inkable and it gains you lore. Its location healing ability is not what is to watch here – it’s the ability to gain lore that matters. This could pair well in aggro decks that like to go really wide, helping them bolster their lore gains further.
Bruno’s Return 26/204
Bruno’s Return is another Amber healing card, and that in and of itself is not good enough to help this card see play. Sadly, returning characters to your hand isn’t going to validate adding this unInkable card into most decks.
Cogsworth – Majordomo 5/204
Julieta Madrigal – Excellent Cook 13/204
At cost three, Julieta is relatively handy not because she heals so much as because seh lets you draw a card. Still, it makes you wonder why you would bother playing her when you can wait a turn and play Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing instead.
Atlantica – Concert Hall 33/204
Atlantica is an interesting location that could be helpful in reaching those high cost, Sing Together cards. However, otherwise it’s probably not going to be all that helpful.
Prince Eric – Seafaring Prince 21/204
Prince Eric isn’t totally useless. He gives you a favorable trade against certain commonly used characters like Madam Mim – Fox. Most will prefer to run Simba – Protective Cub, however.
Donald Duck – Musketeer Soldier 8/204
Donald Duck works like Simba – Protective Cub but with a higher cost. Its handy ability is the reason for this higher cost, but also prohibits it from being as useful as Amber’s handiest bodyguard.
Prince Erik – Ursula’s Groom 22/204
While we’ve had plenty of Prince Eric cards so far, this is the first Floodborn one. This card and its pair (Ursula – Eric’s Bride) seem to be telling the alaternate story of what would have happened had Ariel not successfully stopped the pair from marrying. Erik is quite obviously still in Ursula’s spell here, forced to bodyguard for her till the end of his days.
Apart from the story, I’m not sure this card is the best of cards. But it’s a cool story!
Daisy Duck – Musketeer Spy 7/204
This Daisy Duck works a lot like the Daisy Duck who was popular in Rise of the Floodborn (Secret Agent). The main difference is that this Daisy Duck’s ability comes into play when she is played, not when she quests. That actually makes her a bit handier in many scenarios.
Max – Loyal Sheepdog 14/204
Gaston – Despicable Dealer 10/204
This Gaston card is pretty solid, and similar to other cards that have seen play like it, including Pluto and Doc (both Amber characters). This deck could work really well in Amber/Ruby decks that love to pay less for stronger characters.
First Aid 27/204
Amethyst cards
Yen Sid – Powerful Sorcerer 223/204
This Legendary rare looks different than your typical card because it will be included in the brand new Illumineer’s Quest game – a new and collaborative format being released in Ursula’s Return. Apart from its looks, the card is super strong, giving more credence yet to the Magic Broom deck.
Bruno Madrigal – Out of the Shadows 38/204
Bruno Madrigal is certainly an interesting inclusion in this set that’s bringing Encanto characters into the fold. Apart from being depicted promenintly in the trailer for Lorcana’s Fourth Set, Bruno’s ability is a little underwhelming with plenty of other, better cards achieving the same sort of thing.
Luisa Madrigal – Magically Strong One 47/204
Luisa Madrigal is a strong rush character – the strongest yet to be introduced to Amethyst. I’m excited about this card – it could have a similar capability as Maui – Hero of All to dish out some crazy damage to Locations or other pesky cards your opponent has in play.
Dolores Madrigal – Easy Listener 41/204
Dolores Madrigal is pretty cool, giving your Madrigal-themed deck an inherent draw support.
Triton’s Trident | Item 66/204
Are you ready to be completely and totally…underwhelmed? That’s at least the emotion Lorcana fans are expressing online after this particular reveal. Triton’s Trident has been teased for some time, but now that it’s hear, many of us (myself included) had hoped the ability might be a little more powerful than this. Still, granting every character boosted strength based on your card count is cool.
Ursula – Sea Witch Queen 58/204
Given the set is named after her, you would expect a lot out of Ursula. And this card certainly does not disappoint. Three lore value, and a beefy 7 will power make Ursula good as is. But, of course, that’s not where her power stops. She also has an ability that causes your opponent to be unable to exert characters to sing songs – one of the strongest mechanics in the game.
Mystical Rose 64/204
How could you not like an iconic item like the Mystical Rose from Beauty and the Beast? However, there’s not currently an amazing application for this card where gaining two lore would be so amazing. Are we perhaps going to get a new purple Beast? If so, you could pair this potential beast with the existing Belle from Sapphire.
I suppose we will just have to wait at the edge of our seats and find out!
Second Star to the Right 61/204
Second Star to the Right is the single strongest draw card other than A Whole New World to be revealed yet. Of course, you will need an impressive 10 cost to sing this card. How prohibitive will that be? I personally would be willing to pay it to avoid some of the adverse effects that can accompany A Whole New World (like allowing them to draw into a Be Prepared).
Flotsam & Jetsam – Entangling Eels 44/204
Flotsom & Jetsam have yet to be given a really meta-relevant card, and this one isn’t it. Although it boasts the alternate shift mechanic, letting you discard cards to play it, that’s not enough to make this otherwise bland card playable. And that’s a shame, especially given the fact it’s a Floodborn. I would have expected something slightly more exciting.
Isabela Madrigal – Golden Child 45/204
This Isabela Madrigal – Golden Child card is very intriguing. Being Evasive with an ability that grants her extra lore value that bumps her up to four lore is strong. However, it comes with the catch that other characters can’t quest. One interesting use case for this card would be in the Sapphire/Amethyst deck. You could pair her with Lucky Dime to gain that lore without having to quest her, or quest her. Either way, I think some interesting decks will come out of playing this particular card.
Casa Madrigal – Casita 67/204
The Encanto theming is strong in this set, and the card Casa Madrigal is no exception. That being said, this card’s actually not all that good. It’s will power isn’t quite high enough to put it out of harms way from popular threats in the game (Maui) and you have to have a character here to gain lore. Forbidden Mountain is a better option if you want a low cost location.
Pepa Madrigal – Weather Maker – 53/204
Pepa has a decent ability. But I’d rather play Elsa – Spirit of Winter despite her higher cost.
Camilo Madrigal – Prankster 40/204
Camilo has a versatile ability that lets you grant strength or extra lore depending on the situation you find yourself in. While that’s pretty handy, neither is strong enough to justify the four-cost of this character.
Elsa – Storm Chaser 42/204
Elsa – Storm Chaser is not a bad card. She can grant rush and challenger +2 to any character on the board which is a handy double effect in the game right now. The most immediate use case here would be to quickly and reliably take out locations with a lot of cards. However, given she isn’t Inkable, I doubt she will see much play. Awesome artwork, though!
Ursula’s Lair – Eye of the Storm 68/204
In case you were wondering if Ursula-themed decks were going to be a thing in this set – they of course are. That being said, this location doesn’t quite have what it would need to be relevant. Still, a great option for those wanting to build an Ursula deck!
Tick-Tock – Ever-Present Pursuer 56/204
Despite it’s relatively high Ink cost and low lore value, I actually like this card. It’s got an incredibly beefy health stat and Evasive, meaning that against many decks it’s just going to stick around.
Belle Accomplished Mystic 36/204
While this card looks gorgeous, we’ll have to wait and see how useful it is. My first impression is that it’s not likely going to be an excellent card in play. the mechanic that lets you move damage around hasn’t seen much play. However, there seems to be several cards supporting that strategy in this set, so maybe it will make a comeback.
Flotsam 43/204 and Jetsam 46/204 – Ursula’s “Baby”
I’m not sure what it is exactly that Lorcana set designers find so fascinating about Flotsam and Jetsam. They are in every set and just as unlikely to see play each time.
Magic Broom – Illuminary Keeper 48/204
This Magic Broom card works well with the Magic Broom strategy, giving it additional draw support that might hopefully make that deck archetype actually work (fingers crossed).
Marshmallow – Terrifying Snowman 51/204
Peter Pan – Shadow Finder 54/204
I feel like we are due for a powerful, playable Peter Pan character card. This is not that card. It’s combination of abilities while interesting serve no particular purpose in current deck building, and likely won’t see play.
Mrs. Potts – Enchanted Teapot 52/204
Bruno Madrigal – Undetected Uncle 39/204
For the most part, the Encanto themed cards in this set have been a little underwhelming. This card has some cool aspects to it, especially the gaining three lore thing. It’s unlikely that it will be enough to get this card into competitive decks, however.
Magical Maid – Feather Duster 50/204
Magical Maid is noteworthy for one reason, and that being its the first Amethyst character I can think of to have two lore at two cost. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Pico – Helpful Toucan 55/204
Ursula – Mad Sea Witch 57/204
For the most part, this Ursula seems to be here to enable her new Floodborn Shifting version. That being said, her challenger ability makes her pretty useful for what would otherwise be a vanilla card.
Swing Into Action 62/204
Rose Lantern 65/204
Ursula’s Plan 63/204
Ruby cards
Mulan – Elite Archer 224/204
Say whaaat? A Floodborn Mulan? That in itself is pretty epic (and surely we’ll get an enchanted Mulan as well). However, that’s not all to be excited about here. Ruby is getting a pretty powerful damage spreading character here with an ability even stronger than Steel’s Tinker Bell Giant Fairy.
Goofy – Super Goof 107/204
Goofy looks super good – he’s got Rush and you gain lore just for challenging a character? Count me in!
Mulan – Enemy of Entanglement 115/204
While this Mulan card may not be the strongest card in the world on her own, she’s excellent shift material for the very powerful Floodborn Mulan revealed in this set.
Fa Zhou – Father of Mulan 105/204
-
Fa Zhou – Mulan’s Father2 Cost | Ruby | CharacterStrength 0 | Willpower 4 | Lore 1Storyborn · Mentor
WAR WOUND: This character can’t challenge.
HEAD OF FAMILY: Ready chosen character named Mulan. They can’t quest for the rest of the turn.“I’m ready to serve the Emperor.“
While it’s cool to get another card reveal (Ursula’s Return spoilers have been few and far between this season), this particular card isn’t likely to have a huge impact on the game. Still, people wanting to build Mulan theme decks will be happy to get their hands on this particular two-cost character.
A Pirate’s Life 128/204
A six-cost song that causes your opponent to lose two lore and you to gain two lore. Interesting. I don’t think this card will see play as lore-losing cards tend not to be very popular right now. But you never know!
Imperial Proclamation 131/204
This is a very, very, very good card, giving Lantern-like abilities to Ruby decks. I can defintely see this card seeing play to deadly effect, making it even easier for powerful cards like Madam Medusa or Lady Tremaine come out a turn earlier. In the popular Amber/Ruby Mufasa deck, it can be combined with cards like Lantern, Pluto and Doc to further accelerate the rate at which you can play characters.
Sisu – Emboldened Warrior 124/204
Sisu is a pretty solid card, granted extra strength for cards in your opponent’s hand while also getting access to a lot of lore. This could be an interesting early game tech for Ruby decks that otherwise like to have more cards than their opponent’s.
Khan – Beloved Steed 110/204
Looking for a vanilla card featuring a sidekick to Mulan? Look no further than Khan!
Li Zhang – Valorous General 112/204
This Li Zhang card looks cool but doesn’t offer a lot of added value to existing decks in the meta.
Be King Undisputed 129/204
This card reminds me of Down the Rabbit Hole from Rise of the Floodborn if you remember that card, except for one strong difference – it’s a song. I really like this card, and can see it being played if characters with Ward become too prominent. This affords the same workaround that Lady Tremaine does, making your opponent chose the character and not you.
Snuggly Duckling – Disreputable Pub 135/204
This is a cool card but I don’t see it fitting in great with Ruby’s typical strategy. Ruby decks want to just clear the board so they can dominate in the late game. I don’t think most Ruby players are going to care if they gain lore while challenging. That being said, in decks that are themed around loring/challenging like with Shere Khan, this could be an interesting addition.
Hercules – Daring Demigod 109/204
Here we have a card that looks a lot like another character that we all know and love (Maui – Hero to All) but with some obvious differences. First and foremost, it’s not Inkable, which severely hampers its ability to see play in most decks. That being said, it’s got the Rush keyword which spells certain death against almost anything you’ll face. That combined with the seven strength actually makes it even more versatile than Maui in some situations, especially against decks that play Seven will power Locations in hopes of evading Maui.
While not nearly as versatile as Maui, this card could be an interesting tech against certain locations in niche scenarios.
Medallion Weights – 132/204
A lot of cards have come out in Ruby that enable players to draw cards when characters challenge. However, those strategies haven’t panned out much, and it’s unlikely Medallion Weights will either.
Namaari – Heir of Fang 117/204
Naamari is pretty cool, but she’s not as helpful as another character with similar stats – Prince Erik – Expert Helmsman. I don’t see why you would pick her over Erik, so she’s probably unplayable.
Lumiere – Fiery Friend 113/204
Lumiere is a pretty good card. However, Ruby is so filled to the brim with good cards you have to be exceptional to actually be intriguing for players.
Tuk Tuk – Lively Partner 127/204
We’ll see if locations come into play to the equation to make a strategy like Tuk Tuk worth it. In the current meta, he’s certainly superfluous.
Brawl 130/204
Vitalisphere 134/204
Training Grounds – Impossible Pillar 136/204
Beast – Wounded 103/204
Beast could easily work its way into Amber/Ruby decks, with plenty of damage for Rapunzel to heal for cards, and very useful stats otherwise.
Steel cards
Ariel – Sonic Warrior 175/204
It’s about time we got a Floodborn Ariel. It doesn’t hurt that’s she’s pretty crazy strong. I could see this card pairing well with the existing Beast – Relentless deck that’s popular in the Lorcana meta.
Captain Hook
This vanilla Captain Hook has a strong strength stat but otherwise is not particularly remarkable (despite having some really stellar artwork that would look right at home in The Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
Mickey Mouse – Playful Sorcerer 225/204
All I can say when I see this card is…heck yes! My broom deck just got an even bigger buff! Dealing damage equal to the amount of Broom characters you have in play is no joke, and Mickey has a lot going for it apart. He’s got Shift, solid Lore, and Resist +1? Things seem to be getting serious for me and my fellow Broom deck enthusiasts.
Luisa Madrigal – Rock of the Family 184/204
Luisa Madrigal is a relatively vanilla card that won’t see much play. But fans of Luisa will certainly be glad to have her in their collection!
Alaadin – Brave Rescuer 171/204
For a Floodborn Aladdin this card is a little disappointing. We already have a card with a similar ability from Into the Inklands (Wildcat) and while it sees some play, it’s relatively niche.
RLS Legacy Canon 202/204
The ability to deal 2 damage to a character or Location each turn is pretty powerful. However, it comes at a high cost that will put it out of reach for most decks, requiring you to pay two Ink and discard a card.
The Wall – Border Fortress 203/204
If you like Mulan a lot you might really like Ursula’s Return. There are plenty of Mulan cards in this set, and some are better than others. This one is one of those that is less strong. With no lore gained passively, few will actually run this card in their deck.
Ling and Chi-Fu
I’m going to cheat a little here and cover these two cards together because my feeling about them is relatively similar. While it’s cool they hail from Mulan, I see little reason to play these vanilla cards unless you really want a Mulan-themed deck.
Chi–Fu – Imperial Advisor 177/204
Unlike the other two cards above, Chi-Fu is actually surprisingly good, complete with an “Overly Cautious” unique ability that grants him two additional lore for a total of three lore. For a three cost character that’s pretty impressive!
The Mob Song 198/204
The Mob Song does some serious damage, but you’ll need a combined total of ten cost in characters to sing it. Still, that’s pretty reasonable given this songs effectiveness, and means you could likely clear the board with just two five cost characters in play to sing it!
Rajah – Royal Protector 192/204
Rajah has an interesting ability that prevents most opponent’s from challenging him, but that’s not really intriguing enough for you to stop and consider implementing this card into your strategy with plenty of other, better options out there.
Philoctetes – No-Nonsense Instructor 190/204
Phil is one of the strongest cards included in the Sapphire/Steel starter deck from Ursula’s Return. He gives you a huge edge on the competition by allowing you to gain one lore each time you play a Hero deck. It’s hard to imagine a Hero deck not playing Phil, and will probably single-handedly help make that archetype popular.
Thebes – The Big Olive 204/204
Thebes is the final card in the main set number-wise, and it’s deceptively good. Only a two cost location, it has seven will power, only costs one to move a character to it, and grants you lore everytime a character banishes an opposing character while there. This card an be handy in a number of situations, and is a huge competitive advantage in the Sapphire/Steel starter deck it is included in.
Donald Duck – Buccaneer 179/204
Pirate-theme deck enthusiasts might have fun with this card, but most won’t see a lot of advantages to including this Pirate Duck in their deck.
Imperial Bow 201/204
This card performs decently in the Sapphire/Steel starter deck that comes with Ursula’s Return. Outside of that, it has limited usefulness, even in Hero decks.
One Last Hope 197/204
One Last Hope is a cool card but its unInkability won’t enable most decks to justify using it. You’re better off just playing a Cinderella – Stouthearted if you want the challenging readied characters ability.
Arges – The Cyclops 173/204
The Beast – Thick-Skinned 176/204
Magic Broom – Ariel Cleaner 185/204
Lefou – Opportunistic Flunky 181/204
Mickey Mouse – Standard Bearer 188/204
Sapphire Cards
Rapunzel – Appreciative Artist 153/204
Apart from being a gorgeous card, this Rapunzel looks really promising. She benefits from having Pascal in play, gaining Ward, and has three lore. I’d include this princess in my deck!
Anna – Braving the Storm 137/204
Finally it looks like we might be getting a playable Anna character. The cover of the Sapphire/Steel starter deck teases a potential Floodborn Anna. Meanwhile, this two-cost Anna is pretty solid. She’s got four will power and an ability that pretty easily gives her an extra lore value.
Hans – Noble Scoundrel 146/204
With these two Frozen characters (Hans and Anna) it seems that the typing/classification game is getting more real. Anna gains a lore value for having a hero in play, while Hans grants you a lore for having a Princess or Queen in play. I think this card is pretty cool and I’d certainly include it in my Frozen themed deck!
Flounder – Collector’s Champion 144/204
Flounder has quite the following among Lorcana players. And while his fandom might make this particular card popular, right now there seems to be a limited use case to justify adding this flounder to your deck.
Great Stone Dragon 167/204
Great Stone Dragon adds additional versatility to Sapphire’s already strong Inking skillset. Only this time, you can Ink cards from your discard. This is pretty strong – until now you’ve mostly had to Ink your resources. However, most decks don’t have cards targeting characters in the discard yet, meaning they’re not really part of your resources the way the cards in your hand or in your deck are.
Dang Hu – Talon Chief 142/204
Dang Hu is a Villain-centric character that probably won’t see a ton of play outside of casual theme decks.
Olaf – Carrot Enthusiast 149/204
Lorcana seems to be taking a different approach to Floodborn characters in Ursula’s Return. While before the Floodborn status was mostly reserved to really powerful characters with some serious abilities, the new shift mechanic seems to have brought with it a host of less powerful Floodborn characters. Olaf – Carrot Enthusiast is one of those. While granting strength is okay, it’s a relatively niche ability that will only pay off in very specific decks.
Ariel – Treasure Collector 139/204
This Ariel might be one of the strongest cards to come out of Ursula’s return so far. She brings to mind Belle – Strange But Special from The First Chapter who has seen a ton of play. However, this Ariel is easier to use as long as you have an item deck. Not to mention she’s got Ward.
It seems pretty clear that Item decks are going to grow in versatility beyond just what we see in the current meta once Ursula’s Return hits shelves.
Treasure’s Untold 165/204
First things first: this card is gorgeous. I like the wide angle of the image, showing the full cave where Ariel keeps her stuff in. That being said, I’m not a huge fan of this card. While undoubtedly some brave souls will attempt to work it into their deck, a cost of six is too much to pay to bring items back from the discard.
Seldom All They Seem 164/204
Speaking of gorgeous cards, it’s hard to imagine a more beautiful card than Seldom All They Seem. Too bad its effect is too limiting to see play.
Dig A Little Deeper 162/204
Dig A Little Deeper is a very, very strong card. I think this card will likely be a staple in most Sapphire decks, giving them much greater card search capacities than they’ve had access to to date.
Field of Ice 166/204
Field of Ice is a really interesting concept. However, given it is a three-cost Item, I doubt Sapphire decks will make room for it when they could be playing Fishbone Quill instead. The best part about this particular card is the silhouette of Elsa in the background.
Ariel’s Grotto – A Secret Place 169/204
Ariel’s Grotto stands out for a number of reasons. First, it’s only two-cost, making it quite easy to play. Second, it’s got a high willpower stat of seven, which is basically the minimum cost willpower these days to make a location competitively viable.
Third, if you are running an item deck, then this card is incredibly useful, letting you gain two lore passively each turn. While most decks will opt to just run MckDuck Manor still, I think this card could see some play in item heavy decks where they can benefit from the reduced cost of playing it versus McDuck Manor’s slightly higher four-cost.
Triton – Champion of Atlantica 158/204
It’s hard to imagine a beefier character than this Triton Floodborn card. That being said, I’m a little confused about the ability, “Imposing Presence.” So far, Sapphire seems to have a huge emphasis on Items in this set. Triton’s ability would make more sense if it was based on each Item you have in play instead of location.
It’s not a card I’m super excited about but I’m sure some undersea enthusiasts will look to work him into their decks.
Prince Phillip – Gallant Defender 152/204
If you’re looking to use the Support strategy that’s featured prominently in this deck, Prince Phillip could be pretty strong, giving Resist to anyone chosen for support. Outside of that use case, Prince Phillip is pretty limited.
Fa Li – Mulan's Mother 143/204
She’s pretty vanilla, but she’s notable given the fact she’s the first three will power character granted to Sapphire. She’ll probably see play in some decks just for that.
Scuttle – Expert on Humans 154/204
Triton – Discerning King 159/204
Transformed Chef – Castle Stove 157/204
Emerald Cards
Pegasus – Gift for Hercules (84/204)
Getting a one-cost Evasive character is pretty cool. Also, Pegasus is the first Emerald card to be revealed from Ursula’s Return. I can’t help but think there are some cool combos in the works here, and can’t wait for what else will come out in this set to compliment Pegasus!
We Don’t Talk About Bruno 97/204
Is it safe to say we can now talk about Bruno? This card is very strong – a Sudden Chill, Mother Knows Best and more packaged into one five-cost Inkable song card. The best thing about this card is that it discards a card at random (is that a first for Lorcana?), making this card all the more powerful.
It looks like discard decks won’t be going anywhere after set four!
Ursula’s Garden – Full of the Unfortunate 102/204
Ursula’s Garden is a pretty cool location card that I can see getting some decent play in Emerald decks thanks largely to its seven will power stat. That puts it out of reach of Maui – Hero to All. While the “Abandon Hope” ability is undoubtedly strong, it’s likely going to just be icing on the cake for most players glad to just have a location card that might stick around for a few turns.
Signed Contract 99/204
This Emerald Signed contract card is pretty cool. However, it is undeniably a bit niche. If you expect to play against, for example, Steelsong, you’ll be loving all the free cards. Many decks (most, in fact) play considerably fewer song cards however, making it less likely you’ll actually see the benefit of this cards inclusion.
Cri-Kee 69/204
Cri–Kee has a lot going for it. Its got three lore, and an awesome ability that grants all of your characters +3 Strength the turn it is played. That’s going to be especially good for Emerald – an Ink without the strongest challenger characters in the world.
Diablo – Devoted Herald 70/204
Diablo is probably the strongest of the alternate shifting Floodborn characters revealed in Ursula’s Return. It can be used on its own as a powerful draw engine, enabling you to benefit off of your opponent’s draw efforts and keep on an even playing field with them. Because it is Evasive, it is likely to stick around, collecting you passive draw support turn after turn (until someone manages to banish it).
Hiden Inkcaster 98/204
When this card was revealed, the Lorcana community sort of freaked out. The likes of this item have not been seen in the game before, granting all cards in your hand the ability to be Inked. This is a hugely helpful tool in Emerald’s already powerful arsenal, enabling characters to add extra not Inkable cards into their deck and avoid getting stuck more easily without Ink.
Pegasus – Cloud Racer 83/204
When the original low cost Pegasus was revealed, I assumed something bigger was cooking. When I first saw this card, I was a little disappointed with it. However, now that I’m taking a second look at it, I could see this actually being a pretty helpful card, especially in aggro decks like the Ruby/Emerald Evasive deck. By granting all of your characters Evasive for another turn, you can protect them so they can gain more lore quickly. It’s definitely going to be strongest in aggro decks, and that’s a good thing because aggro has been underrepresented as of late.
Pete – Rotten Guy 86/204
Under the Sea 95/204
Under The Sea is a pretty cool card and would be really effective if it only targeted characters with one strength higher. As it is, eight-cost is too high to pay for just returning two strength characters to the deck.
Prince Phillip – Warden of the Woods 88/204
Hero-themed decks look really exciting this deck, and Prince Phillip grants a pretty powerful Ward ability to all heroes in play, making it pretty hard for you opponent to easily take them out. That being said, We already have another character who does this to ALL characters, and she’s a bit stronger (Aurora – Dreaming Guardian).
Gunther – Interior Design 72/204
Gunther is a pretty cool card. It’s got decent stats, lore value, and is Inkable. However, his ability is just a little underwhelming, and probably most decks won’t be eager to play him.
Hera – Queen of the Gods 76/204
If it’s your heart’s greatest desire to build a Hercules/Olympus themed deck, this card would be a great addition. Otherwise, Hera is a little too niche to see play in most Emerald decks.
Vision Slab 100/204
Vision Slab is a pretty cool, niche item that could work its way into Emerald/Steel damage decks. Gaining an extra lore passively for having damaged characters in play is a pretty neat ability, and the fact that it isn’t a locations means it’s harder to take out.
Tor – Florist 91/204
JAQ – Connoisseur of Climbing 77/204
Magara – Liberated One 80/204
Megara – Captivating Cynic 79/204
The Muses – Proclaimers of Heroes 90/204
