Lorcana’s Second Set Full Launch is Off to a Shaky Start

Waiting for Lorcana

Lorcana fans wait in line for stores to open with no product.

So far, Lorcana’s second set, Rise of the Floodborn, hasn’t had much better luck hitting it out of the park for fans than its first set release. Despite noble efforts from creator Ravensburger, this card game is still ridiculously hard to find.

Although we’ve already opened all of the Rise of the Floodborn products and reviewed them in detail, we still thought it might be fun to checkout the local department stores and see what they were doing for fans of the popular game on the big “full retail launch date” as it has been hyped. Namely, two big stores in our area that carry Lorcana products (allegedly) are Target and Best Buy.

At Target, however, while there were plenty of Pokemon products (it was freshly restocked that last night) there was not a hint of Lorcana products to be seen, although several Lorcana fans were browsing the trading card section hoping to score some product.

At Best Buy, things were even more dismal. As we drove past the store we saw a line of Lorcana fans just waiting for the store to open in hopes of bagging Lorcana product. Not interested in waiting in line on a cold morning, we grabbed coffee and came back right at store opening at nine am. However, there were no products anywhere.

Lorcana: Rise of the Floodborn Online Sales Have Been a Mess

While it’s perfectly straightforward to pick up Lorcana products on the secondary card market, it’s going to cost you. These products are so rare that they are being sold sometimes for twice their suggested retail price (although those numbers have been decreasing lately). Of course, Ravensburger wants these products available at their intended retail price, not for the inflated values they are currently seeing as fans attempt to chase those rare and valuable Rise of the Floodborn cards.

In one attempt to get products into the hands of fans, Ravensburger opened up their own website for Lorcana orders. However, the attempt was eventually abandoned as the site was hit with a massive DDOS attack that forced them to preemptively shut down. Last I was in the que, there were 140,000+ others also waiting for their chance to buy Lorcana products at suggested retail price.

More recently, Amazon has introduced a digital que process where you have to actually be invited to buy these $16.99 products, with the more in demand products (like the booster box) already out of stock.

Shop Disney introduced Rise of the Floodborn products to their site. However, they are already sold out of the hottest ones and their starter decks (which I was able to add to my card and checkout with) come with a hefty $8 shipping fee which puts them out of the running for me.

Needless to say, demand for these products still far outstrips supply, and fans really looking to get their hands on them are better off heading over to secondary markets like TCGplayer or eBay for the time being.
