*Updated February 25, 2024: now that the entire Into the Inklands card list has been revealed, we have updated this article to be the definitive guide to the best Into the Inklands cards from each card type.
The best character cards in Into the Inklands
I absolutely can’t wait for this card. There’s nothing like it in Emerald to date (and not really much like it in any ink type right now). Sure, Robin Hood doesn’t have any fancy ability like Evasive or Ward to make it stand out. But being a six-cost inkable character with four lore value is enough to get me excited. Although only a rare, this card has me excited.
This Legendary Jim Hawkins card is going to be a pretty deadly card to have in Location decks. Being able to play a location for free whenever he is played is going to be a huge advantage in the new Location Lorcana meta. As if that weren’t good enough, Jim Hawkins also can move to Locations for free, and also has a decent lore value, making him an all around good card, and one of the best in Into the Inklands.
Morph can be used to Shift any character, giving decks that run Emerald a huge advantage. Virtually any deck that runs characters with Shift are going to benefit from having this handy little card included in their arsenal.
Tinker Bell – Generous Fairy
Tinker Bell is deceptively strong and easy to miss given she’s not a legendary. Before, the only card that could do the same thing as her was the Be Our Guest song card. As we’ve learned from past competitive Lorcana decks, however, characters that combine strong abilities only otherwise accessible via songs tend to be quite popular. b
Many cards in Into the Inklands grant you benefits from having Locations in play, but none is stronger than John Silver. For each location you have in play, John Silver gains a lore value and added resist. In many ways, John Silver will be the backbone of location strategies until something bigger and badder comes along.
In an otherwise incredibly balanced and varied game (post Inklands), Ursula stands out as possible Lorcana’s single most broken card. While her ability sounds a little convoluted at first glance, it’s pretty crazy when you actually see it in action. She can sing any song twice, doubling the effectiveness of cost three or lower songs. This also makes her a card that works in just about every deck, as most decks use songs.
If you needed another reason to believe that Dragon Fire is becoming increasingly irrelevant, then look no further than Prince Eric. Prince Eric is (potentially) a two character banishing card – capable of taking out lower cost characters with his two strength (or finishing off weakened ones or locations). After being banished, Eric also packs a punch, letting you banish any chosen character.
The best song cards in Into the Inklands
Beware underestimating this card. I could see The Boss Is On a Roll challenging the popularity of a similar three-cost song, Friends on the Other Side. Being able to look at the top five cards and choose which go on top of your deck (in any order) is an ability of the likes we’ve not seen to date. And as if it needed any extra reason to add this to your deck, you get a lore just from playing it.
Boss Is On a Roll certainly qualifies as a meta changing card.
Remember those bygone days of Rise of the Floodborn and The First Chapter when all you had to worry about was dealing with pesky characters? Songs like Grab Your Sword and Be Prepared were overpowered back then as they could easily wipe the board of any chance your opponent had at succeeding.
Well…characters aren’t all you have to worry about anymore, which is why this card is going to be so impactful. And Then Along Came Zeus gives you the option to do five damage to a character or location, giving you flexibility when dealing with lore threats on your opponent’s board.
The Bare Necessities grants a powerful means to Amber decks to counter the before unrivaled Be Prepared card. Now, use a character to sing The Bare Necessities in order to counter Ruby’s best card. Many, many decks will be running this card, including the already popular Amber/Emerald discard deck.
The best item cards in Into the Inklands
One cool thing about into the Inklands beyond Location cards is the number of powerful items we’re getting. And it’s not just about the items – plenty of cards in the Sapphire help you play items easier and for less cost. Combine that with an extraordinary ability like Lucky Dime’s “Number One” and you have a real top tier potential item deck.
Map of Treasure Planet will be a vital item card for location decks, enabling characters to move much less cheaply, as well as enabling players to play location cards at a discount. The fact that this item card is inkable only bolsters its effectiveness.
The best location cards in into the Inklands
The Queen’s Castle is noteworthy as a location card because of its combined high will power, affordable cost, inkability and stellar ability that lets you draw extra cards passively. Entire decks could be built around this location, and it’s bound to be one of the most impactful in the set. And that’s not even to mention the fact that this card has an impressive lore value of two.
Motunui – Island Paradise
Motunui is an incredibly effective location and you can actually get it in the Ruby/Sapphire starter deck (although it’s cheaper online via the link above). Where this location really shines is in its ability to send cards to your inkwell when they are banished, helping you quickly ramp up your deck and take advantage of more powerful cards.
I see this card becoming a staple in nearly every Sapphire ramp deck.
Best action card in Into the Inklands
At first glance you might be tempted to overlook Ba-Boom! After all, it’s a common card an easy to come across. But it’s actually really strong, and one of the most versatile damage dealing pure action cards right now, letting you dish out damage to either locations or characters.
The best Floodborn characters in Into the Inklands
Jafar is a powerhouse card with many fans already building decks with him featured prominently. This is thanks to his ability that grants you lore whenever you draw a card.
Robin Hood is a well rounded card, granting you two lore when he quests, when he banishes another character in a challenge, and even giving you an extra card when he himself is banished. As if that weren’t enough, he’s also playable onto another Robin Hood character for only the cost of three ink.
Here’s another Treasure Planet character shaking things up in Into the Inklands. Also a Legendary rare card like Jim Hawkins, Milo Thatch could be really, really good. With a three lore value and an ability that returns all opposing characters to their player’s hand, Milo is a strong card with some added insurance built into him.
